I made a post here about summer anime I’m looking forward to, but with me picking up the “Blood Lad” manga a few days back and becoming really excited about its adaptation, it’s already outdated. As of right now, though, I’m most looking forward to the “Moyashimon,” “Rinne no Lagrange,” and “Yuru Yuri” sequels, then “Natsuyuki Rendevous,” and “Blood Lad,” and maybe “Joshiraku” and “Tari Tari.”

So far as this season goes, my favorite series are probably (in some determined order)…

“Lupin III,” “Sakamichi no Apollon,” “Space Brothers,” “Fate/Zero,” “Nazo no Kanojo X,” ”Shirokuma Cafe,” “Jormungand,” “Kimi to Boku 2,” “Hyouka,” and “Tsuritama.”

I’m watching a lot more than just that, as I really don’t have anything else going on right now, so it’s not like the shows at the end of that list are bad… Actually, I rather like both “Hyouka” and “Tsuritama,” I’m just sort of cautious about whether or not either will end up paying off in the long run. “Tsuritama” in particular has been hinting at things for a really long time at this point without any actual or satisfying delivery, so, we’ll see.

Is a subbed version available for download yet?

Re: Berserk (I’m assuming)

Nah, and there’s been some level of confusion with the raws (took long enough to get them, too), so… even with groups trying to jump on it as soon as possible, I wouldn’t expect a release until tomorrow evening at the very earliest. It would be cool if I’m proven wrong here, though.

There are some really fluid and nice action sequences, and in a format like that with enough quick cuts or whatever, it looked pretty okay. The moment you’re actually watching it and pay attention to anything but central elements in the foreground… or pause to get a sense of what any of it looks like while not moving around everywhere… it has a definite “bargain bin” feel to it. Any visceral or gritty impressions of the original manga (or anime) have been completely ripped from the entire thing, leaving a glossed over, unavoidably cheap, and, again, lazy visual mess in their place.

Welp, the first “Berserk” movie’s disc release has come…

and…

it looks like shit.

We finally have some substantial scenes in high enough resolution to fairly judge, and, yeah, it just looks awful. The visuals are “passable” at best, “lazy and awful” at worst. So, to everyone who was claiming that people were whining about its animation for no other reason than because they aren’t open to extensive (or complete) CGI… or to everyone who claimed that we should wait until its proper release before criticizing a precious Berserk project… or to everyone who claimed that fans should just be happy that they’re finally getting a new Berserk anime…

No. It’s terrible. It’s awful.

Traditional animation vs CGI circlejerking aside, I’m looking at an anime adaptation released almost twelve years after the last one that, by all merits, looks like complete trash in comparison. It’s not some grand creative vision or breaking new grounds in regards to CGI anime production; it’s just lazy. It is marred by a pervasive laziness entirely unbefitting of the special project it should be. Yeah, the story is still solid, but there’s no real reason (financial gain notwithstanding) to retell it without any sort of outside purpose or even the shallowest of applied artistry.

I’m still going to watch it. I’m still going to post .gifs taken from it on my blog, along with every other anime tumblr in the world. Many of these are likely to rack up a good number of notes, and I will know that I am only forcing myself through this dreck for such a whorish aim.

It’s “April Story,” a short (67 min) feature directed by the same guy who did “All About Lily Chou-Chou” and “Hana and Alice.” Previously… nobody has seemed to really care when I posted things from non-anime or tv drama-related Japanese film, but because tags don’t show up on my blog’s page itself, I’ll go back through and add a proper source statement to them.

I really love hearing foreigners (from anywhere, regardless of native tongue) adopt an “American” accent and/or participate in what is viewed as a typical American conversation. It highlights everything that is so fascinating and cool about accents and any sort of regional linguistics in general in such an accessible and direct fashion. She’s introducing herself to her peers by informing them that she studied abroad during her high school years (at least), thus providing a segue into this playful dialogue. Idk, carry on, just really into this movie right now.
